We all know how complicated it can get when it comes to SEO and getting search engine traffic. There’s just so much to learn.
And most importantly, it gets even scarier when things and trends keep changing over time.
Over the years, Google has made a lot of changes in its algorithms and introduced new types of links and tags.
In this post, I’m going to show you 10 types of links that actually matter and are important for SEO.
Usage of different types of links helps in SEO and protects you from getting penalized by the search engines.
Some of these links are common, have been around for years now, while some were introduced recently.

Internal links are used to link relevant content on your blog together.
Linking your relevant blog posts together helps in increasing crawlability for search engine bots by improving your site architecture and also keeps your readers for a longer time on your blog which reduces your bounce rate.
Make sure to link to 2-3 relevant posts in every new blog post you create. You should also try to update your old posts once a month by adding internal links to them.
Don’t underestimate the power of internal links.
External or Outgoing links are the links that you use to link to other websites on your blog.
You must be wondering “Why would I send traffic to someone else’s blog/website? That’s completely absurd!”.
You should and you would. Let me tell you why…
Because Google likes it! If you’re linking to useful and trustworthy content from your blog, it means that you’re a good source of information (and you’re not selfish! Are you?).
But you have to be strategic with who you’re linking to because you don’t wanna send your readers to your competitors (and lose money).
What you wanna do is link to websites that are not your direct competitors. For example, .gov, .org or .edu websites.
You should aim at linking to one such website in your every blog post.
Backlinks are the incoming links from someone else’s site to your blog.
They are really important for Search engine optimization. Backlinks are like the arms of a good SEO strategy. When someone links back to your site, it means that they trust you and you share valuable information.
Which in turn brings you traffic as well as builds your authority. The more quality sites link back to you, the better.
You should always try to collaborate with others, write guest posts and get as many quality backlinks as possible.
The canonical links or tags are used to tell the search engine bots about which URLs should be indexed or given priority in case of duplicate content.
Duplicate content or pages can cause a lot of trouble in SEO by confusing the search engine crawlers.
Here is an example of a canonical URL:

Let’s assume that there’s another URL with name page2 and has the same content as page1. So, if you want search engine bots to index page1, then you use the canonical tag in it (as shown above).
Quick Tip: Yoast Plugin makes it really easy for you to use canonical URLs. While editing a page, go at the bottom, Yoast>Advanced and in the canonical URL section, write down the URL of the page that contains the original content.
If you want the page you’re linking to open in a new window, then you use the noopener tag.
You should use this tag when linking to external sites or affiliate links (when readers are going away from your site).
But, on the other hand, the noreferrer tag hides referrer information (the website who is linking to your site) when the link is clicked.
If someone arrives at your site from a link that uses this tag, your analytics won’t show who referred that link. Instead, it will show as direct traffic in the acquisition section of your Google analytics.
A link with noopener and noreferrer tag looks like this –

Nofollow links/tags tell search engine bots whether to follow that link or not.
The Nofollow tag is used in –
- Affiliate links
- Untrustworthy links
- Low-quality links
A link with nofollow tag looks like this –

If you don’t use the rel=”nofollow” tag, then it automatically means that the link is a dofollow link.
These two types of links are pretty new in the game and were recently introduced by Google in September 2019.
Sponsored tag is used to identify links on your site that were created as part of advertisements, sponsorships or other compensation agreements.
When you’re writing a sponsored post, it is a must that you use sponsored tag while linking to external websites within that post.
UGC here stands for User Generated Content, and the ugc tag is recommended for links within user-generated content, such as comments and forum posts.
These are the different types of links that you need to understand and use accordingly in your content.
Link building is an important aspect of SEO and doing it right will help you rank better in search engines.
