You have registered your domain, got the hosting plan, set up your blog successfully, created all the important pages and now you’re excited to put some content out there.
I can feel your excitement here!
But there are a few other important things that you need to do immediately after starting your blog in order to avoid facing some serious issues.
What are those things? Keep Reading..
Permalink structure? What’s that?
A permalink structure is just the fixed web address of a specific post or page (basically the URL of that page).
Once you select your structure, all posts will be published using the structure.
Here’s what you have to do –
Go to Dashboard>Settings>Permalinks and under the common settings, select “post name” & save the settings.
That’s it! You’re done.
2. Submitting the Sitemap
Creating & submitting a sitemap allows Google & other search engines to crawl through your website and rank your blog posts subsequently.
The easiest way to do this is by installing the Google XML sitemaps plugin.
Next, submit your sitemap to Google in the Google search console>Sitemaps after signing up for the Google webmasters tool for free.
3. Securing your Website
What happens when tommorow you login to your website & find out that there’s nothing except a blank screen?
Who are you going to blame? None other than yourself…
But can you avoid that? Yes, you definitely can.
Using a security plugin
I use & recommend Wordfence plugin. It is completely free to use.
All you have to do is just install & activate it.
Wordfence includes an endpoint firewall and malware scanner that were built from the ground up to protect WordPress.
Using a CDN (Content delivery network)
What a CDN generally does is improve your site load speed and boost SEO. Moreover, CDNs also improve the security of your website.
On my blog, I use CloudFlare and it constantly stops threats even before they hit my blog.
4. Setting up Google Analytics
Google Analytics is really helpful to track the number of pageviews and visitors for your blog, see how people are finding your website, track real-time visitors and much much more!
Install Google Analytics Dashboard Plugin & activate it.
After that, set up your Google analytics account & copy + paste the tracking code in the plugin.
5. Fonts, Colors & Favicon
Decide your fonts + colors carefully and use them constantly throughout your blog.
It helps you develop a brand for your blog and makes stand you out of the crowd.
If you notice, I use 2 Fonts and 3 colors constantly throughout my blog.
A favicon is a small image that you see at the top in the Internet tab beside the page/post name.
Make sure to add your own favicon as it will make your blog look more professional.
6. Set up Social Media accounts
Doesn’t matter which social media network you plan to be on, set up all of your social media accounts. This would include Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, etc.
Make sure to use the same social media handle/username for each one, if possible.
This would protect your username from being stolen or used by someone else.
Also, Complete your social media descriptions carefully and use your topic related keywords in them.
7. Post at least 5 blog posts
Once your blog is up and running, Make sure to write some posts & promote them.
Your visitors are not going to show up out of nowhere to see your empty blog.
Writing some good blog posts & promoting them will bring some audience to your blog, which will motivate you and give you a good headstart.
8. Start Building your E-mail List
Start Collecting e-mails & building your list from day one.
Don’t make the mistake of forgetting to give your readers a way to subscribe to your mailing list.
Your list is going to be your most sure source of traffic. Google can change its algorithm, Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms have the exclusive right to do the same and this can have a negative impact on your traffic.
But you completely own your list and you decide when and how to use it.
Don’t make the mistake of not building your list from day one.
